TOUR IBERIAN HOLISTICALLY
GANADO O DESIERTO
Allan Savory visited for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula from the 10th to the 21st of June 2019. A tour packed with events designed to raise awareness of the work of one figure, whose work is transforming million hectares of the planet with a solution to the great challenges facing humanity. A solution based on the workings of nature: the Management is Holistic.
The Management Holistic is a revolutionary approach to decision making and the use of management tools, able to reverse the process of desertification large-scale and mitigate climate change with the capture of atmospheric carbon in soils of the grasslands. In this system one of the key pieces is the use of cattle, must-have tool to restore ecosystems, and that has to be managed properly so that it is not a problem.

The experiences of Handling Holistic already in place on all continents, with nearly 20 million acres under management, have already demonstrated their effectiveness in all kinds of contexts climatic, geographical, social and cultural. It is time that these results are obtained also in the iberian peninsula, where problems of desertification are compounded each year and a correct management of the territory would provide the field of more financial and human resources.
HOLISTICALLY, THE TOUR
THE GOAL IS TO MAKE THE MANAGEMENT HOLISTIC RANCHERS, SCIENTISTS, CONSERVATION ORGANIZATIONS AND ADMINISTRATIONS
Allan Savory along with Jody Butterfield (co-author of the Book, Handling Holistic: a revolution of Common sense) and Daniela Ibarra (CEO of the Institute Savory) toured various territories of our peninsula (Spain and Portugal), where the processes of desertification and land degradation, and the importance of livestock require a radical approach.
Visited Castellar de la frontera (Cádiz), National Park and Biological Reserve of Doñana (Almonte, Huelva), Retamal de Llerena (Badajoz), Elvas (Portugal), Montemor O Novo (Portugal), Casar de Cáceres (Cáceres), Arroyo de la luz (Cáceres) and Madrid, with several types of events in diverse spaces and highlighted by its previous track record or uniqueness environment.
The objective of the trip was to publicize the Management Holistic ranchers, professionals, scientists, conservation organizations and Authorities, to be able to reconcile the ancient view of our livestock (transhumance grazing directed with dog,...) with the latest innovations and knowledge about the relationship between the soil, water, vegetation and animals.
The tour served as the impetus mainly ranchers and farmers to begin to manage their territories in a way that regenerate soil fertility, biodiversity, vegetation and the water cycle, at the same time strengthening the rural population through the profitability of the system proposed by Savory.
1 – INDOOR – Master Class
The “management holistic” look for the correct operation of the territories from the point of view of social, environmental and economic. Can be used with success in all types of
territories under management, such as, for example, in the protected natural areas, in the pastures, in the pastures, in the fields of culture... This approach is based, environmental and productive, to recover the ancient, intimate and subtle performance that occurs between the large herds of herbivores, the communities of permanent pasture and soil microbiology.
2 – OUTDOOR – Sessions of communication and dissemination of information. Practices in the field
Visits to farms livestock demonstration of the Handling Holistic, where analyzed with Allan Savory of the actions that have been done and what the results are obtained on the topics of soil, productivity, plant and animal, profits, etc
Visit other experiences livestock where they analyzed the situation that produces the conventional management of the animals (continuous grazing).
We also visited some natural spaces (Doñana National Park), where we analyzed the effects of the exclusion of cattle over the years of these spaces by making conservationist, and how they could restore the lost balance with a cattle managed in a holistic way.
3 – MEETINGS AND GATHERINGS
Were held public and private meetings with different actors in the socio-political sphere, scientific, productive and environmental, and with decision-makers on the territories, where they shared the vision of the Management, Holistic take on the issues of conservation, governance and land stewardship.
